What to Expect from an Oral Appliance for Snoring and Sleep Apnea
A custom oral appliance can be a comfortable option for snoring and some cases of sleep apnea. Here is how the process works at Barra Dental.
Snoring and broken sleep are easy to brush off, but they can shape how you feel every day. For some patients, a custom oral appliance is a comfortable option, often alongside a physician’s treatment plan.
How an oral appliance works
The appliance is worn while you sleep. It gently positions the lower jaw slightly forward to help keep the airway more open. Each one is custom-made for your mouth, so it fits comfortably and stays in place overnight.
Do I need a sleep study first?
An oral appliance is typically recommended after a sleep study confirms the diagnosis. If you have already had one, bring the results to your visit. If you have not, we can help guide you through the next steps.
What the process looks like
Evaluation. We review your symptoms, your oral health and your nighttime breathing concerns.
Custom fabrication. Your appliance is made to fit your teeth and jaw.
Fitting and adjustments. A few small adjustments are common while we fine-tune the fit.
Follow-up. We check how you are sleeping and how the appliance feels over time.
Working with your physician
Dental treatment for sleep-disordered breathing can complement your physician’s recommendations and your overall treatment plan. We coordinate with your physician so your care fits together.
If snoring or poor sleep is affecting your days, we would be glad to talk it through. Call 978.470.4555 or book a visit to schedule your comprehensive exam.
